Having an eye test is very important, eye tests are essential to monitor your eye health and maintain the very best possible vision for you. We strive to offer the best service possible when testing your eyes and we listen to your needs to get the best results from your eye test. We offer NHS eye tests, private eye test and eyecare vouchers.

Children’s eye examination

Martin Berry Opticians provide free NHS eye tests for all children under 16 and those under 19 and in full time education. If a child is found to need spectacles, a contribution is provided by the NHS.

Looking after children’s eye care is very important as they are at an age where it is imperative to have their eyes checked. If you would like your child to have an eye test please contact us and we can give you all the details.

Good vision is imperative to children's development, have regular eye examinations are the key to good vision.

What to expect from your eye examination

Our eye tests take between 30-45 minutes to carry out. We have are general routine that we carry for during every eye examination, however depending on your needs we will tailor your eye test to you.

During your sight test we will check your sight and see if you require any visual corrections. During your eye test we shall also check for any potential eye diseases such as cataract, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Our optician will explain the results to you once you have had your eye test and you will be able to ask any questions that you may have. At the end of your eye test the optician will make any recommendations to you, the optician will also consider your lifestyle and your needs.

How often should you have an eye examination?

It is recommended that most people should get their eyes tested every two years. However in some circumstances a more frequent eye examination will be recommended.

• Children wearing glasses
• Have diabetes
• Are aged 40 or over and have a family history of glaucoma
• Are aged 70 or over

NHS eye examination, who is entitled?

You will qualify for an NHS-funded sight test if:

• you're aged under 16
• you're aged 16, 17 or 18 and are in full-time education
• you're aged 60 or over
• you're registered as partially sighted (sight impaired) or blind (severely sight impaired)
• you've been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
• you're 40 or over and your mother, father, brother, sister, son or daughter has been diagnosed with glaucoma
• you've been advised by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) that you're at risk of glaucoma
• you're a prisoner on leave from prison
• you're eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher – your optometrist (optician) can advise you about your entitlement

You're also entitled to a free NHS sight test if you:

• receive Income Support
• receive Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (not contribution-based)
• receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
• receive income-based Employment and Support Allowance 
• are awarded Universal Credit and meet the criteria on earnings limit
• are entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
• you are named on a valid NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2)

People named on an NHS certificate for partial help with health costs (HC3) may also get help.
